Hii King Chiong : Solving The Plight Of People Is The Best Reward Instead Of Claiming For Credit
26.06.2015--Majulah Miri founder Dato Hii King Chiong emphasised that if elected representatives had put the people first, Majulah Miri did not need to be established in the first place.
Hii told reporters that he knew Tudan Unity Bridge would be upgraded to a two-lane concrete bridge 2 years ago. He also returned to the site together with Public Works Department (JKR) Miri’s engineer Ting Sie Lok and announced the good news to the villagers.
“The upgrade project of Tudan Unity Bridge that links Tudan Phase 5 and Desa Pujut Phase 2 is one of my service centre’s main concerns. It began from nothing and we kept close tabs on its progress. I am not trying to show off but I could not hide my delight for the villagers because this is a hard-earned bridge. Now we have finally fulfilled our promise made 2 years ago to upgrade it into a two-lane permanent concrete bridge.”
He pointed out that the purpose of serving the people is to help solve their problems and improve their quality of life instead of claiming for credit.
He hoped elected representatives and philanthropists would not put too much emphasis on ‘equivalent return’ for efforts made. The people’s bright eyes will see and tell who the real benefactor is.
He was pleased to see the implementation of the bridge upgrade project so that all his efforts would not be in vain. This made sure the Tudan residents would enjoy better infrastructure under the care of the government.
Earlier, JKR could only build a wooden bridge due to limited funds. The upgrade to Bailey bridge later materialised when Hii contributed financial assistance for the project.
JKR was responsible for the construction of the bridge and also supply of tar and a portion of gravel with a total expenditure of RM250,000. Materials used to build foundation of the structure and other required materials were sponsored by Hii.
Right after the Bailey bridge was opened, JKR brought further good news. Under the efforts and appeals by Hii, the state government has approved the construction of a two-lane concrete bridge and residents of the two areas would soon be able to enjoy the improved infrastructure.
