Hii King Chiong Calls On Members To Have Rational Thinking And Attitudes

16.03.2015--Honorary Life Advisor of Miri Chinese Association, Dato Hii King Chiong, called on members to have rational thinking and attitudes towards cultural development of multiracial nation, unity of the people and tolerance towards religions while promoting Chinese culture.

Guest-of-honour Dato Hii King Chiong was unable to attend Chinese New Year Gathering Celebration cum Primary & Secondary Schools Of Miri Division Chinese Calligraphy Competition Prize-Giving Ceremony jointly organised by Sarawak Chinese Association and Miri Chinese Association. He was represented by president of The Federation of Miri Division Chinese Associations Sarawak, Mr Hii Teck Yun, to deliver his speech. He praised the associations for organising various activities to promote Chinese culture and foster unity among members and races over the years.

He pointed out that Chinese culture is extensive and profound. Chinese calligraphy is a distinguished knowledge of which the calligrapher must become one with the brush if the brush is to come to life. A lot of people train very hard in calligraphy without real appreciation and feel of the life element in Chinese calligraphy. Calligraphy is a self-cultivation art and appreciation is essential to the mastery of calligraphy.

The organising chairman of tonight’s ceremony, Mr Ting Nai Ho, is a Chinese calligraphy expert and teacher. His calligraphic accomplishments and skills are very much appreciated and recognised. Under his meticulous nurturing, Miri will produce more young calligraphers.

Hii pointed out that extremism is worrying and may cause unnecessary hatred and hostility in society. “We must be able to distinguish between right and wrong and reject extremism.”

He said that among the association members are outstanding businessmen who have made contributions to the society, setting good examples for others to follow.

Hii explained that organisations and entrepreneurs should create richer society’s values rather than amass wealth endlessly. In addition, political parties and elected representatives should be appreciated for their unwavering services. “We must stop squabbling and splitting. Instead, we must enhance mutual cooperation and support.” He also urged members to be humble, friendly, tolerant and moderate.
