House Covered With Overgrown Weeds For 20 Over Years Receives No Attention? “If There Is No Existing Law, Enact New Law To Protect Public Safety”

21.10.2015--United People’s Party (UPP) Piasau chairman and Majulah Miri founder Dato Hii King Chiong was shocked on seeing a double storey terrace house abandoned for 20 over years covered with overgrown weeds.

Hii earlier received complaints from the residents on an abandoned corner lot double storey terrace house at Jalan Lautan 4A in Ocean Park with overgrown weeds. Hii, together with three councillors – James Hii, Kok Yung Kai and Siew Tick Chai, today visited the area to further understand the situation.

Hii was disappointed and puzzled as to why no attention has been given to various problems of the people.

Councillor James Hii pointed out that as resident of Miri city, everyone should put emphasis on city appearance and take immediate action on everything that endangers public safety.

He added that if there is no existing regulation or statute to deal with a situation, new regulations must be enacted in order to protect public safety. This is the responsibility of councillors which must not be ignored.

He clarified that they will search for the owner of the abandoned house through various means and find out the relevant unit responsible for the matter. After all relevant information is gathered, the council will then consider whether to apply existing laws or enact new regulations to safeguard public interests because the problem has posed dangers to the neighbours and also the public.

A local resident Batan Alang who has lived there for more than 30 years said that since he and his family moved to the area in 1985, he noticed the house was rented twice to two different families and thereafter left vacant for more than 20 years until now.

He said that they were worried as the abandoned house was surrounded by overgrown weeds and on several occasions, snakes and unknown insects climbed over to their house compound.

He revealed that he had lodged complaint thrice to the city council and elected representatives but did not receive any feedback. He had no choice but to seek assistance from Hii.
