Hii King Chiong : Hawkers Act As Economic Frontline, Economic Success Depends On Hawkers

07.03.2015--Dato Hii King Chiong said hawkers and traders are large and pivotal group which has a significant influence in stimulating active markets and national economy. Hawkers act as economic frontline and economic success depends very much on them.

Hii was invited as guest-of-honour to Miri United Hawkers Association’s Chinese New Year gathering celebration but was unable to attend and represented by Mr. Hii Teck Yun to deliver his speech.

He said that year 2015 is full of challenges with falls in oil prices and national income, increase in prices of goods and impending implementation of Goods & Services Tax (GST) in April. Hawkers are consumers too and households are put under further financial stress.

The market condition did not look good and some viewed it as a crisis. However, he hoped everyone would not panic because crisis is a mixture of danger and opportunity. Wherever there is danger, there lurks opportunity. Smart hawkers must promptly change and adjust business strategy according to market trends and turn crisis into opportunity.

Hii said that year 2015 is a year full of hope and also full of challenges. He is willing to face challenges together with everyone. He will do his best to render assistance as long as it is within his ability.

“I hope the association will boldly face the reality and actively seek business opportunities through changes in strategy, joint ventures and business diversification to create opportunities and overcome difficulties.”

He said that the hawkers association is an important networking organisation for the members. Besides fighting for members’ welfare and interests, it also provides efficient business information and promotes networking among members. Members should adapt promptly to changes and constantly upgrade themselves to be ready for challenges.

He appealed to fellow hawkers who are financially sound to participate in social services to provide support and assistance to the disadvantaged groups.

Finally, he thanked all who worked together with Hii King Chiong Service Centre to help resolve problems of members. He hoped members will continue to work together with Miri City Council and the local government to make Miri one of the cleanest and most passionate city.
